Giving a succinct plot summary of Pillars of Eternity is difficult, since both games are quite long and involved, and the story can change considerably depending on your choices. While it's impossible to say for sure what the main story in Avowed will be, if it takes place in the world of Eora, there's a decent chance that it will pick up on story threads from the first two Pillars of Eternity games. In case you missed the Avowed trailer at the July event, here it is once again:
However, Avowed doesn't seem to be a direct sequel to Pillars of Eternity II, and since it requires a totally different gameplay engine (real-time first person gameplay instead of real-time-with-pause isometric), three years could be optimistic.įor the moment, let's say that Avowed could be out in 2022, or later. The first game came out in 2015, and the second came out in 2018, suggesting that we could get another one in 2021. Since the game is set in Eora, the world from the Pillars of Eternity games, perhaps it would make more sense to look at the PIllars of Eternity release schedule instead. The company has gone as many as four years between major releases (Neverwinter Nights 2 in 2006, then Alpha Protocol in 2010), or as little as five months (Alpha Protocol in May 2010, followed by Fallout: New Vegas in October 2010).

NotE3 and Summer Game Fest 2023 is over for another year. There's nothing in the trailer that feels new - no story hook that demonstrates Obsidian's chops at writing, no Elder Scrolls-style instance of "living, breathing" AI - but a straightforward fantasy adventure seems appealing next to Starfield's promise to feature "over 1000" barren unsatisfying planets.Īvowed - which I will one day refer to as Unavowed by mistake - is aiming to release in 2024. Most of the trailer focuses on the combat, from Doctor Stranging fireballs into existence, leaping and bashing enemies with swords, and whacking things with swords, pistols, and other magical attacks. "He is a former soldier, and his idealistic and pragmatic temperament will help guide you as you venture out into this wild frontier." His face isn't that friendly when he's pointing out no one likes you in the trailer.
"Kai is a Coastal Aumaua currently residing in the Living Lands and is one of the only friendly faces you’ll find here," says a post on Xbox Wire from Obsidian co-founder Feargus Urquhart.
The narrator of the trailer above is Kai, one of Avowed's companions. Expect sentient mushrooms and angry lizard-like tribes, experienced through first-person combat rather than Pillars' top-down perspective. Avowed is set in Eora, the same world as Pillars Of Eternity, and specifically on an island beset by plague and covered in strange plant life called the Living Lands.
